Safety in sport: are helmets effective?

Dr McIntosh says the current thinking on the effectiveness of helmets depends on the sport you are talking about.

He says while there’s strong evidence of the efficacy of helmets for cyclists, there’s no evidence headgear prevents or reduces the incidence of concussion among football players.

“The current status is that the type of headgear that’s available commercially doesn’t prevent head injury or concussion.”

He says there’s still a huge amount of research to be done into the different sporting codes, and says they’re very challenging studies.
